There is some doubt _John will come on time. A. that B. whether C. which D. when 问题:这道题老师给出的答案是B,而《牛津中阶英汉双解词典》上有一个类似的句子:“There is some doubt that Jane will pass the exam.” 1. a. I doubt whether John willcome on time. b. I doubtthatJohn will come on time. 由此可见,doubt whether等同于not quite sure whether。 c. I suspect that John willcome on time. 2. a. I doubt whetherJohn will come on time because he waslate early on; so I’m not sure whether he will come on time. b. I doubt that Johnwill come on time because he never comeson time. c. I suspect that Johnwill come on time because he always comeson time. 动词与连词 语义替换 确信程度 语义功能 doubt whether =not quite sure whether Something may not be true 真正地怀疑(genuine uncertainty) doubt that = don’t believe that Something is unlikely 委婉地表达不相信(understated way of expressing disbelief) suspect that = believe that Something is true 委婉地表达相信(understated way of expressing belief) 在口语中,doubtthat与doubt whether更容易区分,因为两者的语音语调是不同的。 3. a. I doubt whetherJohn WILL come on time. b. I DOUBT that John will come ON time. 1:Somebodydoesn’t doubt that … 4. I don’t doubt thatJohn will come on time. 2:Somebodyhas no doubt that … 5. I have no doubtthat John will come on time. 否定句型3:Thereis no doubt that … (此时的意思就相当于说It is certainly truethat …) 6. There is no doubtthat John will come on time. 4:Thereis little doubt that … 7. There is littledoubt that John will come on time. 8. a. Do you doubtwhether John will come on time? b. Do you doubt thatJohn will come on time? 接下去我们可以说,如果你真的怀疑他不能准时到,那么你可以给他打个电话提醒他一下:“Do you doubt whetherJohn will come on time? If you do, youshould give him a call.” 言外之意是,你显然不会再怀疑:“Do you doubt that Johnwill come on time? Surely you believethat John will come on time.” 由题干“There is some doubt _John will come on time”中修饰doubt的数词some表示肯定意义,因此,此时的doubt属于用在肯定句中的类型。 9. There is some doubtthat Jane will pass the exam because Iknow she’s a retard. 10. There is some doubt whetherJane will pass the exam because from whatlittle I’ve seen, I’d guess she MIGHT be bad at exams. 11. There is somedoubt that $2.1 million can be cut from the deficit—Countybudget’s status is shaky. |
